How to watch track racing.
Photo: Masa HiguchiWhat am I watching?
Keirin
The one that starts behind a motorbike (a “derny”). The bike pulls the pack up to speed, peels off, and it's a flat-out sprint to the line.
Madison
The wild tag-team race. Riders race in pairs and hand-sling each other back into the action. Chaotic and brilliant to watch.
Scratch race
The simplest one: a set number of laps, first across the line wins.
Points race
Riders score points at intervals along the way, so the leader isn't always the rider in front. Watch the sprints within the race.
Elimination
Last rider across the line is pulled each lap, until only the winner remains. Also known — fondly — as “miss-and-out.”
Before you come
It's about 24°C and humid inside for fast, optimal riding — dress in light layers.
The velodrome seats up to 940 spectators, including 264 permanent seats, and the building is fully accessible.
Grab a coffee at the Second Cup in the building on your way in.
