A 45-year story of community cycling in Edmonton — and a 20-year push to bring it indoors.

Track cycling in Edmonton has deep roots. The outdoor Argyll Velodrome — a legacy of the 1978 Commonwealth Games — gave the city a home for the sport for decades, weather permitting. Generations of riders learned to race there.

But an outdoor track in Edmonton means a short, unpredictable season. For more than twenty years, a determined community advocated for an indoor velodrome — a place to ride and race all year. That vision is now the track at Coronation Park: a UCI-certified indoor facility, one of only three in Canada.

The move from Argyll to Coronation isn't just a new address. It's the moment a seasonal community asset became a national-caliber hub — while staying exactly what it always was: a welcoming home for anyone curious enough to try.

1976

1976–77

The Argyll Velodrome is built

The City of Edmonton builds a 333 m outdoor concrete track at Argyll Park.

1978

A Commonwealth Games legacy

Argyll hosts the cycling events of the Edmonton Commonwealth Games.

1983

Universiade Games

The track hosts the World University Games cycling competition.

1989

The track goes dark

An improper resurfacing leaves the track unsafe to ride. It closes in September.

1995

1995–96

The community takes over

The Argyll Velodrome Association wins management of the track from the City. Properly resurfaced, it reopens in August 1996.

2001

Nationals at Argyll

The outdoor track hosts the National Track Cycling Championships, followed by the World Masters Games in 2005.

2007

2007–2014

The indoor campaign

The City unveils indoor velodrome plans in 2007. After years of advocacy, Council approves the Coronation site in 2012 and the Coronation Recreation Centre Project in 2014.

Clubs ride first

The new track opens to Edmonton's cycling clubs after two decades in planning.

2026

January 2026

Coronation opens

The Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre opens to the public on January 27 — ahead of schedule — with the grand-opening celebration on January 30.

2026

March 2026

First nationals

The velodrome hosts the Canadian U17/Junior Track Championships — its first nationals, with Canadian records set on the new boards.
