Records fall as the velodrome hosts its first nationals

The 2026 Canadian U17/Junior Track Championships brought the country's next wave to Edmonton — and Canadian records fell on the new boards.

Two months after opening its doors, the Alberta Velodrome hosted its first national championships: the 2026 Canadian U17/Junior Track Championships, March 27–29. The country's fastest young riders got their first crack at the new boards — and the boards proved fast.

Ontario's Alexander Gies broke the Canadian record in the flying 200 on his way to titles in the pursuit, sprint, Madison, and 500 m time trial. Montreal's Élodie Malois set three Canadian records and won six individual junior women's events plus team sprint and Madison gold. In U17 women's racing, Milton's Addison Marcynuk swept the pursuit, sprint, keirin, points race, elimination, and time trial. Team BC left with 21 medals and 10 national titles.

Riders set personal bests all weekend, and Canadian Cycling Magazine called the new venue “seriously impressive.” Not a bad debut.
